The 41-Day Mandala Vrat

Before undertaking the pilgrimage, every devotee must observe the Mandala Vrat โ€” a 41-day (or 48-day) vow of rigorous spiritual discipline. This transforms the devotee's body and mind, making them fit vessels for the Lord's grace.

  • 01Wear the sacred mala (black bead necklace) at all times โ€” never remove it during the Vrat period.
  • 02Observe strict celibacy and purity of thought, word, and deed throughout the 41 days.
  • 03Consume only sattvik (pure vegetarian) food โ€” no meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, or tobacco.
  • 04Bathe twice daily, wear only black or blue clothing, and sleep on the ground or a simple mat.
  • 05Chant "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" continuously. Attend the temple daily for evening aarti.
  • 06Avoid anger, lust, greed, and ego. Treat every fellow devotee as a manifestation of Lord Ayyappa โ€” address them as "Swami."
  • 07Walk barefoot as much as possible. Do not indulge in luxuries or entertainment during the Vrat period.
"The Vrat is not merely a preparation โ€” it is the pilgrimage itself. By the time the devotee reaches Sabarimala, they have already been transformed by the Lord's grace."
